About this bottle

One ingredient is the so-called Black Forest gold: Black Forest Burgundy truffle. According to the makers of Boar Gin, it reduces the gin's heat and bitterness.

Botanicals

The gin contains 19 botanicals, apparently including a large proportion of wild herbs from the Black Forest. Unfortunately, there's no complete list, and usually at least a few ingredients aren't available locally. Either way, this is an intense gin with plenty of depth.

Tasting

Nose

Alongside a hint of alcohol, a fresh aroma comes straight at you. A citrus-like freshness immediately dominates, quickly joined by an earthy base note and a few herbal aromas. It's intriguing: you get an impression of an easy-drinking gin before you've even tasted it. Juniper? Yes, but it's one element among many.

Palate and finish

Here we go. The gin gets straight to the point: first freshness, then the flavours come charging through the taste buds' front door. Slightly sweet, almost fruity notes jostle with other impressions like shoppers on Black Friday. There are delicate and stronger herbs, a resinous element probably from the juniper, and even hints of grass at times. It's all pleasantly warming, then settles into a lovely harmony that never turns dull.

The finish has a pleasant warmth without being uncomfortable. A lasting citrus impression gradually gives way to a floral aftertaste. Intriguing.

Verdict

The description might lead you to expect something else: a darker-tasting, perhaps rather one-note gin. Boar Gin has some surprises in its flavour profile, though. You read that claim often enough, but not every gin delivers on it. This one does.

BOAR Gin from the Black Forest keeps cropping up whenever you look into gin. Reason enough to take a closer look, even though the mention of Burgundy truffle initially put me off. Truffles aren't normally my thing at all.
