Breakfast Martini – Arctic Circle Style

The Breakfast Martini might not be the first cocktail you'd expect in a gin cocktail collection, but it's certainly one of the delicious ones.

Ingredients

  • 60 ml
    Gin
  • 20 ml
    Rosé vermouth
  • 20 ml
    Orange liqueur
  • 1 teaspoon
    Lingonberry jam
  • 15 ml
    Lemon juice

Steps to make the drink

  1. Chill a Nick & Nora glass.
  2. Shake all the ingredients for 30 seconds without ice.
  3. Add plenty of ice to the shaker.
  4. Shake for 30 seconds. With Wachtfeuer, we want a little more dilution because it's 40% ABV; other orange liqueurs may need a slightly shorter shake.
  5. Tip the ice out of the glass.
  6. Double strain into the glass.
  7. Garnish with lemon zest if you like.
  8. Enjoy ice cold.

Salvatore Calabrese invented and created the drink in 2000 at The Lanesborough Hotel. It normally uses typically British orange marmalade. For my edition inspired by the Arctic Circle and Finland, the home of Arctic Blue Gin, I used lingonberries instead, giving the recipe a new twist.

Cocktails with flavour variations

The exciting thing about this gin cocktail is the mix of bold juniper from Arctic Blue Gin, or another juniper-led gin, and the sweetness of the marmalade or lingonberries. Add a little acidity and you've got that familiar balance of aromas and flavours.

Of course, you can play with the marmalade and try a different style. Why not a strawberry or melon Breakfast Martini? The important thing is that the flavours work well together. As so often with cocktail making, it's about having fun and finding a good balance of flavours. If everything's the same, it can soon get boring. Simply changing the gin is well worth trying: it can make an incredible difference to the flavour, even with exactly the same ingredient list.

You can get Arctic Blue Gin from the European Craft Club, for example.
