If you fancy mixing along, this 19th-century cocktail is an easy place to start. It was popular around the time the first mixers, such as ginger beer, were appearing. It's simple to make, yet all those flavours bring plenty of fun to the glass.

    Angostura bitters

    Lemon juice

  • plenty
    Ice
  • to garnish

Steps to make the drink

  1. Put ice in the glass.
  2. Peel a long strip of lemon zest and put it in the glass.
  3. Add the brandy or whisky and bitters.
  4. Top up with ginger beer.
  5. Cheers!

To save yourself some work, pick up a citrus zester. It'll give you lovely citrus ribbons and terrific lemon aromas that go beautifully with the brandy and spicy ginger beer. Otherwise, get out a sharp knife and spend a little longer cutting. Leave out the white pith; it's just bitter.
