Main ingredients

Negroni

The Negroni recipe recently celebrated its 100th birthday, and it's one of the world's most popular gin cocktails. It's based on the Americano, a mix of vermouth and Campari.

Ingredients

  • 30 ml
    Gin
  • 30 ml
    Campari
  • 30 ml
    Sweet red vermouth
  • plenty
    Ice for stirring

Steps to make the drink

  1. Put plenty of ice in a mixing glass.
  2. Add the Campari, gin and vermouth to the mixing glass.
  3. Stir about 60 times with a bar spoon.
  4. Strain into a rocks glass or tumbler over a large ice cube.
  5. Squeeze a piece of orange peel over the drink so its essential oils spray onto the surface.
  6. Garnish with orange zest.
  7. Done. Serve!

A classic gin cocktail

The story goes that the Negroni was created around 1919 at Caffè Casoni in Florence, now Caffè Giacosa. Count Camillo Negroni is said to have asked bartender Fosco Scarselli for an Americano "lengthened" with gin. And so the name and the Negroni recipe were born.

There are plenty of variations, but the original Negroni recipe is compellingly simple: equal parts of all three alcoholic ingredients. The flavour can vary enormously depending on the gin, though.
